Aleksander Isak went off the field after a ‘reckless’ challenge by Van de Ven in Liverpool’s 1-2 away win against Tottenham.
Liverpool have confirmed their worst fears. Record signing Alexander Isak suffered a fractured leg against Tottenham and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines. The £125m striker underwent successful surgery on Monday for an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture, dealing a severe blow to both player and club.
The injury occurred as Isak scored the opener in Saturday’s 2-1 win, with Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven’s sliding challenge making contact after the shot. Liverpool manager Arne Slot did not mince words when assessing the tackle, drawing a sharp contrast with the earlier red card incident involving Xavi Simons.
Reckless by Van de Ven
“This was for me a reckless challenge,” Slot stated in a forceful press conference. “I think I said a lot about the challenge of Xavi Simons… which for me was completely unintentional. I don’t think you will ever get an injury out of a tackle like that. The tackle of Van de Ven, if you make that tackle 10 times, I think 10 times there’s a serious chance that a player gets a serious injury.”[smartframe_images_embed customer-id=”04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93″ image-id=”neimMa2pdSe2″ style=”width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3500px; aspect-ratio: 3500/2333;”]
Thomas Frank disagrees
Tottenham boss Thomas Frank immediately rebuked Slot’s characterization, mounting a strong defense of his player. “I obviously disagree,” Frank countered. “We are talking about a defender that will do everything to avoid the goal… I think reckless challenges, you haven’t seen one from Micky. He’s a very fair and competitive player.”
Isak’s difficult season continues
The confirmed fracture compounds a desperately frustrating debut season for Isak. Arriving from Newcastle without a pre-season, his integration has been hampered by fitness issues and a prior groin injury. Slot acknowledged the striker’s difficult start, noting, “It’s been a really challenging and difficult period for him… You want to show immediately all the qualities you have, but that was simply impossible.”
With Isak now ruled out for what Slot confirmed will be “a couple of months,” Liverpool’s attacking resources are stretched to the limit. Mohamed Salah remains at the Africa Cup of Nations, and Cody Gakpo is still recovering from a muscle injury. The burden now falls heavily on the in-form Hugo Ekitike, turning a promising Anfield career into a crisis before it ever truly began.
