Liverpool can poach Chelsea’s forgotten man that Jurgen Klopp said is worth £60m

SEVILLE, SPAIN - APRIL 13: Tammy Abraham of Chelsea warms up before the UEFA Champions League Quarter Final Second Leg match between Chelsea FC and FC Porto at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on April 13, 2021 in Seville, Spain.

Chelsea are set to sell Tammy Abraham this summer as he simply isn’t valued by Thomas Tuchel the way he should be and Liverpool should be all over him.

The 23-year-old is a clinical finisher and while he is a bit scrappy, that’s precisely what Liverpool are missing in the box after a season in which the Reds tried to be too precise which led to very few low-quality chances being taken.

Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino both struggled to score with regularity while Mohamed Salah was utterly superb, scoring consistently to get 22 Premier League goals and finish just one behind the eventual Golden Boot winner Harry Kane.

Tammy Abraham, however, had a very strange season for Chelsea, with the arrival of new manager Thomas Tuchel seeing him drop out of contention for a starting role altogether with Timo Werner a guaranteed starter.

Despite making just 12 starts in the Premier League, Abraham scored six goals which is just 3 fewer than Roberto Firmino got in 33 Premier League starts and, of course, the Liverpool man has a different role but with Salah carrying the attack, more input is needed from Mane and Bobby.

Abraham offers a more traditional route to goal, with the 1.9m striker a proper no.9 but as he showed last season when he scored 18 goals and assisted 6 under Frank Lampard, he is a clinical forward.

I can only imagine what he could do with service from Trent Alexander Arnold and Andrew Robertson, with the Liverpool fullbacks crying out for a target in the box given Firmino’s poor finishing this season.

In all fairness to Firmino, he’s not a striker and never will be. He’s an attacking midfielder that found success in a false nine role during the 2018/19 season when Liverpool destroyed sides on the counter-attack but his link-up play isn’t as efficient against a low block.

Before Liverpool faced Chelsea in 2019, Jurgen Klopp commented on the Chelsea star, telling the press in a pre-match interview: “Tammy Abraham is now a £60million player.”

While I have no doubt that the German appreciates Abraham’s quality, he was playing mind games ahead of a game against the Blues and even if he was worth that much in 2019, his value has likely taken a skydive this season.

Tuchel clearly doesn’t value the 23-year-old and much prefers Timo Werner even though Abraham scored more goals this term despite starting 17 games fewer than the German attacker.

Liverpool need a clinical striker to increase their efficiency in attack next season and they could make Chelsea regret not nurturing another attacker to his full potential after they let Mo Salah and Romelu Lukaku leave in the past.
