Liverpool can finally sign €40million giant after “a ‘recommendation’ from Jurgen Klopp”

Liverpool are set to renew their interest in Braga’s David Carmo at the special request of Jurgen Klopp.

Last season, the Reds were hit by a massive injury crisis that they attempted to solve by signing Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies.

Ultimately, it was Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams that saved the Reds as well as an Alisson Becker headered goal against West Brom.

However, one player that was close to joining the club according to Braga president Antonio Salvador was 22-year-old, David Carmo.

Speaking in April 2021, Salvador said: “We have kept it as long as possible, but every year we have to sell. In January, David Carmo had a foot and a half at Liverpool, but we ended up retaining him.

“He is a player who, despite being injured at the moment, continues to have several suitors, even in Spain. To have a balanced budget, we have to receive between €12.5m and €15m a year in transfers.

“This is an established point if we are to continue at the same level that we have been at for the last decade. This year we will have to do more to resist the damage caused by the pandemic.”

The defender had a foot in the door at Liverpool but the Reds had already put in motion plans to sign Ibrahima Konate at the end of the season and so Carmo’s move to Anfield was abruptly cancelled.

Now, according to Portuguese news outlet O Jogo, Liverpool have reignited their interest in the defender and Braga are “very likely” to sanction a summer move.

A ‘recommendation’ from Jurgen Klopp” has seen the Reds reignite their interest.

He has a €40million (£34m) release clause in his contract that Liverpool can trigger this summer although it’s difficult to see where the Portuguese fits in among the talented options available to Jurgen Klopp.

Virgil van Dijk and Jurgen Klopp.

Virgil van Dijk is back at his best this season after the ACL injury which ruled him out for the majority of last campaign and he has been a rock for the Reds at the heart of their defence in their bid to win the quadruple.

Alongside the Dutchman, Joel Matip has seen his reputation skyrocket as he has formed a world-class relationship with van Dijk and has showcased his ball-carrying abilities not to mention his ball recovery talent.

As mentioned before, Liverpool signed Konate in the summer and while he has had few opportunities to impress, impress he has.

So impressive have been his performances that Joe Gomez, once seen as the future of Liverpool’s defence, has rarely featured this season.

If the Reds are going to sign Carmo, it would most likely be as a replacement for Gomez but Goal recently reported that he is unlikely to leave.

Goal journalist, Neil Jones, said: “Aston Villa and Newcastle have both been linked, but Gomez is determined to stay on Merseyside, and he is still viewed by Jurgen Klopp as part of Liverpool’s long-term plans.”
