A new report suggests that West Ham are interested in signing Joe Gomez which would bring an end to his nearly decade-long time at Anfield.
While plagued by injuries, the English defender has been vital to Liverpool’s return to the pinnacle of English and European football.
However, with Jurgen Klopp gone and Arne Slot weighing up who fits into his side and who doesn’t, Gomez may be seen as surplus to requirements.
West Ham make approach over signing Gomez this summer
According to a report from HITC, West Ham United are interested in signing the Liverpool defender this month and have made their interest known to the Reds.
Such is his quality, the Hammers are not the only club keen to sign Gomez with Aston Villa and Newcastle United also said to be open to the idea of signing him.
HITC states that Gomez’s agents are working on potential options this month and while the Liverpool hierarchy have intimated that Gomez is a key player, the defender is said to have concerns over his “role under new boss Slot.”
These fears were confirmed when Gomez was a very noteworthy absentee in the Liverpool squad that faced and beat Ipswich Town 2-0 on the first day of the Premier League season.
Liverpool are holding talks with interested clubs, per HITC, and a departure this summer is a possibility.
It may finally be time for Gomez to move on
Gomez arrived at Liverpool in 2014/15 when Brendan Rodgers was still in charge and while he struggled to break into the side, playing at left-back a lot, he came into his own under Klopp.
It is fair to say that without the injuries that have blighted his playing career, Gomez would be one of the very best centre-backs in the world right now.
Alas, he is still a top player and now needs to leave the club in order to find the kind of playing time his talent deserves.
After almost a decade at the club and eight trophies, Gomez deserves the chance to refind himself at a new club that can guarantee him minutes.
