Liverpool are considering a £30million bid to sign Marcos Asensio in January and Real Madrid are willing to let him leave as he is ‘open to a new challenge’.

Although the Reds should ideally look to sign a centre forward to provide Roberto Firmino with competition after his levels have steadily dipped the last 18 months, Asensio would be an interesting option.

The Spaniard scored just seven goals for Real Madrid last season but Jurgen Klopp is world-class at coaxing the best out of attackers.

According to Fichajes, via Anfield Edition, the Reds are weighing up a £30m bid for Marco Asensio to “boost their attacking options in January.”

The forward is reportedly “open to a new challenge” and Real Madrid are willing to let him leave.

Should Liverpool sign Asensio?

Personally, I would say no. While it seems as though Liverpool might have plans to play Harvey Elliott in midfield, signing Asensio would limit his chances to play as Mohamed Salah’s understudy on the right-wing.

Signing Asensio would mean he’d hardly get a look in.

I would be confused if Liverpool, a normally smart and well-oiled transfer machine spent £30m on Asensio, a player with a total of nine-goal contributions last season after passing up on Patson Daka and Donyell Malen when both were available for around €30m.

Both strikers were perfect for the Reds and I expect them to go on and have brilliant seasons for Leicester and Dortmund respectively.

If the Reds want to make a move to sign a forward in the winter transfer window, there are better options out there than Asensio and ones that would require much cheaper wages.

The Spaniard reportedly earns £125,000/week and as a backup, he’d be eating into the Reds’ wage budget considerably without much guarantee of game time.

Another concern of mine, as tenuous as this link is, is that if Liverpool are looking at January signings, why wouldn’t they just make their move in the summer instead of waiting four months, leaving Jurgen Klopp shorthanded in that time?
