Liverpool are confident of reaching an agreement with Mohamed Salah to extend his terms beyond 2023.
The Egyptian has scored 30 goals and assisted 16 this season and in spite of a major dip in goalscoring form in 2022, there is no doubt he has plenty to offer beyond this season.
Suggestions that he is no longer capable of leading the line for Jurgen Klopp and should be sold this summer are wide of the mark.
Salah’s dip in form not indicative of long term decline
Salah has suffered this year from a lack of confidence in the wake of Egypt losing in the AFCON final to Senegal before Sadio Mane and his compatriots secured a place at the World Cup by beating Egypt in a playoff.
It’s no surprise Mane’s form has skyrocketed while Salah is a shadow of his former self but with a summer break beckoning, there is no doubt he will return reinvigorated and ready to fire Liverpool to more silverware.
Hopefully, he can find his form before the season ends as the Reds need him as they fight to win the Premier League and the Champions League to complete a historic quadruple.
Liverpool confident of keeping Salah at the club with new contract
According to Football Insider, the club are set to hold fresh talks with Salah and are “confident an agreement is not far away.”
The forward has reportedly compromised on his £500,000-a-week wage demands and could still sign a massive new deal which will make him the highest-paid player at the club ahead of Virgil van Dijk.
Crucially, Liverpool are prepared to offer Salah a deal which will run for four years until June 2026 – the same length of time that Jurgen Klopp is now contracted for.
The deal “could be worth more than £80million in total”, Football Insider claims.
That would mean he would earn around £20million per year or the equivalent of £380,000 per week which would still mean Kevin De Bruyne and Cristiano Ronaldo earn more.
Hopefully, this deal can be agreed and signed as soon as possible after the season ends.
The only thing more important than signing new talent this summer is ensuring Klopp’s top performers like Salah are kept.
Sadio Mane is reportedly to be offered a deal as well.
While the Senegal attacker is in his 30s, he’s shown the last few months that he’s still an elite performer and as long as Klopp wants him at the club, Liverpool’s owners need to make sure he’s happy and extending his terms is the first step towards reaching that goal.
