Liverpool ambush Newcastle to snatch £40m England ace in transfer twist

Liverpool have shown speed and finesse so far in the market ahead of the opening of the transfer window. The Reds have made some quick moves and are about to spoil Newcastle United’s well-laid-out plans to sign a top target ahead of next season.

Their pursuit of Florian Wirtz has grabbed all the headlines ahead of the end of the season, but sporting director Richard Hughes has several irons in the fire.

Liverpool still want to sign a new centre-back and after their top target, Dean Huijsen, agreed to join Real Madrid, the club are exploring several other alternatives.

They still have their eyes on a long-term who even Newcastle are chasing, but the Magpies are set for some bad news in the upcoming transfer window.

Newcastle are in for some bad news this summer if they want this player

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish succeeded in a bruising battle with Newcastle last summer to hold on to Marc Guhi despite five offers from the Magpies.

The England defender is in the final year of his contract, and the Palace supremo is expected to sell him in the upcoming transfer window.

Newcastle believe they have the edge in the race to sign him, but Liverpool are still interested in signing him as they feel this is a brilliant chance to sign a top defender for a reasonable fee.

The Reds have an ace up their sleeve, and he is the Palace chairman’s animosity towards Newcastle due to last summer’s events.

Journalist Dean Jones has revealed that Parish would prefer not to sell him to Newcastle as he doesn’t like their ownership structure or the way they conducted themselves last year.

“Steve Parish, the Palace chairman, this week was kind of talking about the future of football. And I don’t get the impression he’s that keen to do business with Newcastle still. And they’re one of the leading clubs for Guehi”, Jones said on the Ranks FC Podcast.

“We saw them go for Guehi last time, putting in four or five bids, whatever it was in the end, when they quickly came in for him. And I just don’t think he likes the ownership situation at Newcastle. I think he’s made it clear enough he doesn’t like that kind of scenario.

“And so maybe he prices Guehi out of a deal to somewhere like that. And then you’re thinking, well, are Chelsea going to come in? Are Arsenal going to come in?

“Are Liverpool actually going to come in for Guehi? And what is the opportunity here? I think Guehi could go for as low as 40m, from what I’ve heard.”

Guehi could be the ideal replacement for Virgil van Dijk in the long term, given his experience and Premier League-proven quality.
