Ferguson is set to assess his future at Bologna following the World Cup, with the Scottish midfielder reportedly open to leaving the Italian club.
The 26-year-old Scotland international found regular first-team minutes difficult to secure during his most recent season in Serie A.
Ferguson could be handed a fresh start at Bologna after manager Vincenzo Italiano departed to join Besiktas and was replaced by Domenico Tedesco.
Italian outlet Corriere della Sera reports that Ferguson “has agreed with the management to review his situation” once the World Cup concludes.
The publication also claims the midfielder’s “goal is to evaluate potential offers from top Italian or foreign clubs” after the tournament wraps up.
Ferguson has strong family ties to Rangers, with both his father Derek and uncle Barry having turned out for the Glasgow club during their careers.
It has previously been noted that the midfielder was determined to follow in their footsteps before he departed Aberdeen for Italy in 2022.
Rangers legend Stuart McCall believes new manager Derek McInnes will have made his expectations crystal clear to the club’s American ownership regarding the type of players he wants brought in.
McCall told the Sunday Post: “The last two seasons they have missed big opportunities to go and win the league. Celtic have been as poor as I’ve seen them. But mentality is the word.”
He added: “I’ve seen players laughing and joking on the pitch in the aftermath of losing a game or players high-fiving one another after a 3-0 win over a team at the bottom end of the table – and then coming up short a week later. That is a cultural problem.”
McCall was direct about what standards must be restored at Ibrox, saying: “That kind of stuff just isn’t on at Rangers.”
He continued: “Any player who has signed for Rangers is capable of playing at a decent level, but it is about understanding it is more than that.”
The Rangers legend insisted McInnes would demand the right attitude, saying: “You have to be prepared to fight for the jersey and fight for everything and that’s the kind of spirit I think Del brings to the job.”
McCall also highlighted the importance of character in the dressing room, saying: “Players like Shankland will be vocal at instilling that in the dressing room. You need characters like that.”
Meanwhile, one player who will not be returning to Ibrox is Danish winger Andreas Skov Olsen, after Rangers chose not to trigger the £8.6 million purchase clause from his loan deal.
Skov Olsen arrived from Wolfsburg in January but managed just seven Premiership starts and scored only once, in a 5-1 win against Kilmarnock.
The winger has returned to Wolfsburg following a disappointing campaign and has reportedly been informed he has no future at the club.
Turkish club Besiktas are said to be in negotiations with Wolfsburg over a potential deal for Skov Olsen, either on a permanent transfer or a further loan arrangement.
