Aberdeen striker Kevin Nisbet has attributed his bright start to the new campaign to a rigorous summer training programme completed in the United States.
Nisbet scored twice as the Dons opened their Premier Sports Cup campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory away at Brora Rangers.
The forward spent several weeks stateside working alongside former Hibs and Scotland teammate Ryan Porteous, who currently plays for LAFC.
Nisbet has historically prioritised fitness but has battled pre-season injuries in recent years that disrupted his momentum heading into new campaigns.
He explained: “I trained for a good few weeks in the United States, myself and Ryan Porteous who is my mate.”
“I did one-to-one sessions over there to keep me ticking over and ready for the season,” Nisbet added, highlighting the importance of the individual work he put in abroad.
“Even last season I picked up a small injury in my hamstring. This pre-season I have come into it fit and ready and I think it will be good,” the striker said.
Nisbet was in good spirits after the win at Brora, joking that his double could easily have been a much larger haul on the night.
“I should have scored about 15 or something tonight but the second goal killed it,” he said, reflecting on a performance that saw Aberdeen create numerous chances throughout the match.
When asked about setting a personal goal target for the season, Nisbet was characteristically wry, saying simply: “Ask me at Christmas.”
He acknowledged that the last two festive periods had not been kind, with teammates teasing him that he only truly shows up in January each year.
“Hopefully it starts earlier this season,” he said, signalling genuine confidence that his improved pre-season fitness will translate into a stronger and more consistent run of form.
Manager Robinson has overseen a significant squad overhaul, bringing in 10 new signings and instilling a more direct and attacking style of play across the team.
Nisbet confirmed that playing forward quickly is central to the manager’s philosophy: “As soon as the ball comes in the middle he wants to see runners in behind.”
New wingers Tony Yogane and Lewis Smith have been identified as key weapons, with Nisbet describing them as “two direct, quick wingers with good deliveries who are a little bit different.”
Nisbet also revealed he played a personal role in convincing Smith to make the move from Livingston to Aberdeen, saying: “We have the same agent so I gave him a phone a couple of days ago and sold him the club.”
With Graeme Shinnie having departed, Aberdeen’s leadership structure has been redistributed across a group of senior players including Nisbet, Brad Lyons, Nicky Devlin, Mats Knoester, and Dimi Mitov.
“It is a collective this year as it is hard to replicate what Shinnie brought,” Nisbet said, accepting the shared responsibility ahead of what promises to be a demanding season.
