Jurgen Klopp declined ’emotional return’ post Liverpool departure

Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp has grabbed headlines since he accepted an offer to take up the role of Global Head of Soccer of the Red Bull Group from 1st January 2025 onwards.

Klopp left Liverpool at the end of the season after confirming his stature as one of the greatest managers to hold the post at Anfield.

He spent close to nine years on Merseyside and attained a cult following after winning the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup.

The German is considered a messiah in the stands of Anfield for breaking the club’s 30-year wait for a league title and would be welcomed back any time he wants to return.

However, the hallow around him has taken a beating in Germany since he took up the Red Bull role given the unpopularity of the energy drink company in German football and the criticism they have received for their ownership of RB Leipzig.

Klopp has even been accused of breaking a promise to Liverpool but that hasn’t had much effect on his popularity on Merseyside.

However, Dortmund fans have been left furious by Klopp’s move and it is likely to get worse with this piece of news.

Jurgen Klopp declined a return to Borussia Dortmund

Until recently, the German was an undisputed hero amongst Dortmund fans and was immensely popular at a club where he won two league titles and took them to the Champions League final.

According to German magazine Sport Bild, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke offered Klopp a return to the Westfalenstadion following his decision to leave Liverpool.

Watzke asked Klopp to choose any role he wanted in the football department and was even prepared to tell the board to anoint him as his successor.

However, the former Dortmund boss declined to take up the offer to complete an emotional return to the club.

He made it clear that after his time at Liverpool, he didn’t want to work for just one club again in his career.

It was a clear sign of his future move to Red Bull where he has been charged with overseeing their entire multi-club system across the world.
