Liverpool have made a solid start to the season but there is speculation brewing around the future of some of their top starts at the club going forward.
The Merseyside giants are sitting at the summit of the Premier League table after winning five of their opening six Premier League games at the start of the season.
There is a wave of optimism around Anfield and new manager Arne Slot has done well to quell fears about a dropoff following the departure of Jurgen Klopp at the end of last season.
However, with players such as Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold in the final years of their respective contracts, there is potential upheaval on the horizon for the club.
Salah has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia on a free transfer next summer despite calls for the Reds to break the bank to keep him at Anfield.
Van Dijk’s future is also under the scanner but former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher is more worried about watching Alexander-Arnold leaving the club.
The former Liverpool star admitted that he is growing uncomfortable about Trent-Alexander’s future at the club
Alexander-Arnold is a product of the Liverpool academy and has been a massive player for the club over the years.
He is still only 25 and Real Madrid are interested in signing him on a free transfer next summer if he doesn’t sign a new contract at Anfield.
Liverpool are in talks over a new deal with the player but Carragher is worried about the time it is taking for fresh terms to get agreed upon.
The former Red is unsure about the reasons behind the delay and admitted the longer it takes, the more it would feel that the right-back would leave the club.
He doesn’t expect the biggest clubs in Europe to want to sign either Salah or Van Dijk due to their age but conceded that Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer is a massive draw.
Carragher conceded that he is growing less confident of the defender signing a new contract as the negotiations drag on for months.
‘I am not sure what’s taking them this long’ – Jamie Carragher
“With Trent, I don’t really know what the hold-up would be”, the former Red told Liverpool.com.
“I’m sure Liverpool is gonna make him one of the highest-paid players or maybe the highest-paid player at the club and in the Premier League. That’s where he should be. He’s that great of a talent. It’s just whether he is looking at pastures new maybe.
“Because I’m sure top clubs would be sniffing around him. I think with the other two, yes they could leave on a free and go somewhere else, but I think it’d be difficult to go to many places better than Liverpool in terms of chances of winning the Champions League right now.
“I might be wrong, but I don’t think sort of Real Madrid would be looking at Salah or Van Dijk and not because they’re not good enough but just, you know, their age. But I would imagine they’re looking at Trent. There’s been rumors of that so I’m less comfortable.
“Listen, you have to be less confident the longer it goes on because the club wants nothing more than to announce that these three players have signed or certainly Trent has.
“No one wants this over their head or dragging on. So the longer it goes, the less confident I will be.”
