Jamie Carragher was recently announced as the recipient of Athletic Club’s One-Club Man award 2025. After the honours, he had some pretty consequential comments regarding Liverpool’s transfer strategy.
One of the most celebrated footballers at Anfield, Carragher moved on to a media career after retirement. He is one of the most-watched modern-day pundits in world football today.
And just like many media outlets have been claiming, the Englishman also sees the problem in the heart of Liverpool’s defence. The Reds only have three senior defenders to deploy this season.
Marc Guéhi was expected to join the Merseysiders on deadline day, but Crystal Palace pulled the plug in the end. Austrian manager Oliver Glasner blocked the move after the Eagles’ attempt to sign Igor Julio ended in nought.
Palace retained Guéhi as they didn’t have enough reinforcements to replace their skipper. Reports regarding Liverpool’s continued interest followed as the club has the opportunity to sign the Englishman for £25m in January.
However, as time went on, Arne Slot seemed to have decided on getting the defender for free. As Guéhi’s contract expires at the end of the season, he’ll be a free agent by next summer.

“Might they regret that? Oh yeah”
Jamie Carragher claims that Liverpool will regret not going in for Marc Guéhi earlier. The former England international thinks that this might come back to bite them later in the season.
“There was a report from a couple of journalists, who are basically the best journalists on the beat, they did a story a couple of days ago saying that Liverpool would wait until next season to get him on a free, they wouldn’t go in January.”
“So what I’m saying is they wouldn’t write that unless they felt it was true. I think they will try and bring him in again. Listen, I am sure there’s been a lot of talk between him and the agent and the top people at Liverpool, and they have pulled the plug at the last minute, and they say: ‘Listen, we’re still in for you…'”
“But it sounds like it’ll be more at the end of the season than in January. Maybe was £10m but they are like: ‘No, we want you on a free.’ Liverpool always do what they see in their eyes as value for money.”
“Might they regret that? Oh yeah, I think there’s one situation with Liverpool, that’s the one area…listen, they are three games in, nine points from nine and probably not played that well, so we would probably all say they are big favourites, Liverpool.”
“But that is the one area where that could come back and blow up in their face because they haven’t really got that [cover]. What Guéhi was giving Liverpool competition at centre-back. They haven’t really got that. They’ve got two starters and two understudies.”
“Joe Gomez, injury-prone himself, and the young lad from Italy, he is going to be a great prospect, but if you think that one of them had to play for a couple of months, it is a big difference”, he told the Overlap Podcast.
