Latest reports
According to Spanish publication Fichajes, Liverpool are looking at the potential arrival of the Spanish international, who could be allowed to leave the club before the deadline on September 1st at 11PM.
The move seems unlikely as he only extended his contract last year, and it runs until 2027.
He’s been a key player at Atletico but the report claims he could move on due to manager Diego Simeone playing him in a multitude of positions.
Currently valued at £40.5M, the midfielder is still only 27 and is perhaps the most versatile top-class player in Europe.

What he could bring to Liverpool
As a highly versatile player, he’s played at defensive midfield, central midfield, attacking midfield, shadow striker, right-back and right wing-back during his time at Atletico. What’s more impressive is that he’s shined in all those roles at one time or another.
His 2020/21 season saw him play mostly in midfield and further forward, as he notched 13 goals and 12 assists in all competitions. What was impressive was he still made 1.9 tackles per 90 in the league and 2 per 90 in the UCL, despite his impressive return.
Liverpool know his qualities because they’ve experienced it up close – he notched two decisive goals to help Atletico stage a comeback win over the Reds back in the 2019/20 season. Klopp could use him in a number of ways, including in a midfield two or three or as an adventurous right-back or even on the right wing – the possibilities are endless.
He also boasts a decent injury record, it does include injuries but not any long-term issues. For Klopp, he could feel like two signings rolled into one with his quality and versatility.
