If Liverpool complete £42M signing with reported imminent bid, how will they line up?

Moises Caicedo Liverpool

If Liverpool sign Moises Caicedo amidst talk of an incoming bid, how would the Reds line up?

The start of the 2022/23 Premier League season has been characterised by a few of the bigger teams starting poorly.

Chelsea were thrashed by Brentford while Liverpool are 16th without a win in three games.

Manchester United were rooted to the bottom of the table before they beat Liverpool 2-1.

While there can be no excuse for the shocking body language from Jurgen Klopp’s men at Old Trafford, the Merseysiders have been rocked by injury after injury.

Most damaging has been the injury to Thiago as he is by far the most talented midfielder at the club.

Unfortunately, his body lets him down almost regularly but alongside him on the sidelines are Curtis Jones, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Liverpool are sorely lacking in the middle of the park with James Milner and Jordan Henderson both showing signs of their age.

The Reds lacked mobility and hunger in the engine room against Manchester United.

And there has been talk of a bid from Liverpool to sign Moises Caicedo.

Moises Caicedo bid expected from Liverpool

The Reds are submitting an offer for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo and he could play a variety of roles for Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool are “looking to sign” Caicedo and are “preparing a bid” worth around €50M (£42M) to put an end to their midfield injury crisis.

That’s according to South American outlet, Studio Football, via The Mirror.

Brighton have insisted he is not for sale but if they were to receive an offer worth over £40M for a now 20-year-old that joined the club for £4.5M in 2021, it’s unlikely they would reject it.

Jude Bellingham is Liverpool’s main midfield target but Caicedo is a wonderful talent even if he is very young.

How will Moises Caicedo fit in at Liverpool?

If Jurgen Klopp were to sign Caicedo, he would then have the following midfield options:

  • Jordan Henderson (no.6 and no.8)
  • Fabinho (no.6)
  • James Milner (no.8)
  • Harvey Elliott (no.8 and no.10)
  • Fabio Carvalho (no.8 and no.10)
  • Moises Caicedo (no.8)

Paul Joyce reported for the Times that Liverpool want a multifunctional midfielder to cover a variety of roles within the engine room.

Sam McGuire published a brilliant article discussing who would best suited to such a role.

Caicedo, however, has only really played as a no.8 for Brighton and isn’t really suited to the no.6 role from what we’ve seen of him.

That said, Liverpool can use Henderson as a no.6 where his lack of pace is less exposed if the players around him adjust their roles slightly.

The skipper does have a decent range of passing but he is slow on the turn and sometimes struggles when under pressure while receiving the ball with his back to his opponent.

But Caicedo would be a very useful option to have especially given the number of midfielders (4) Klopp has out injured at the moment.

Liverpool could line up like this with Caicedo and Darwin Nunez back from his suspension.

Alisson, Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Moises Caicedo, Jordan Henderson, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah.
