Ibrahima Konate could stay at Liverpool after major transfer update

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has had plenty of transfer rumours circling him in recent months.

With the 26-year-old currently in the final year of his deal at Anfield, it is no surprise to see Konate being linked with a move away from Liverpool.

The Reds signed Konate from RB Leipzig for £36million back in 2021, but as of 1 January, the defender is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with clubs overseas.

Real Madrid were always seen as the frontrunner for Konate’s signature if he were to leave Merseyside, but it seems as though the Spanish outfit may have had second thoughts about signing the centre-half.

Real Madrid have ‘no interest’ in signing Ibrahima Konate, Liverpool informed

Like many members of Arne Slot’s squad this season, Konate has struggled, with the defender being part of a backline that has conceded 20 goals in their opening 12 Premier League fixtures.

If Richard Hughes was unable to agree terms for a new contract with Konate, it looked certain that the French international would be reunited with former teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold in the Spanish capital.

However, this no longer appears to be the case with recent reports from The Athletic on 28 November claiming that the La Liga outfit have informed Liverpool that they have “no interest” in signing the defender despite the “heavy speculation”.

Given Konate’s form, this is not surprising, as he made another crucial mistake in Liverpool’s most recent game, in which they lost 1-4 to PSV in the Champions League.

Whilst he may not be the most popular player right now, Liverpool supporters will be glad to know that Real Madrid are out of the running for Konate’s signature, which could be the catalyst for the centre-back to put pen to paper on a new deal with the Reds.

Ibrahima Konate could soon find himself on the bench at Liverpool

Football moves quickly, and whilst at one stage, it looked like Konate could be jetting off to Spain to sign for Real Madrid, performances this season look to have taken away all of the Frenchman’s bargaining power.

At this moment in time, the 26-year-old should be grateful if Liverpool even offers him a new contract after some costly mistakes this campaign.

Despite his poor displays as of late, Liverpool will know that ultimately they don’t want Konate to leave, especially on a free transfer.

But with Liverpool reportedly putting in a bid for Marc Guehi in January, Konate could find himself glued to the bench at Anfield for the foreseeable future, even if he does sign a new contract.
