“I don’t understand the hype”: Dietmar Hamann has a massive problem with £220,000/week Liverpool star

Dietmar Hamann slams Thiago

Dietmar Hamann has a massive problem with Liverpool star, Thiago, despite the Spaniard’s brilliant performances in the second half of the season.

Perhaps the only way you can criticise Thiago without seeming like you have an agenda is to discuss his poor injury record both at Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

Since joining Liverpool, Thiago Alcantara has missed 37 games due to injury while he missed a total of 113 during his Bayern Munich career.

The midfielder earns £225,000 per week and while his injuries have been an issue, he performs to an elite level when he is fit.

When he is fit, however, he’s one of the best midfielders in the world and Liverpool have reaped the benefits of his talents this season.

Since he returned to the starting XI on a regular basis, Liverpool’s fortunes this season skyrocketed as he helped them reach three finals and come agonisingly close to winning the Premier League.

Dietmar Hamann says he thinks Thiago is overhyped and is one of the most overrated players in Europe.

“In my opinion, the Reds need to modernise the team a bit, especially in midfield,” Hamann boldly claimed in his column for Sky Sports Germany.

“I don’t understand the hype about Thiago. For me he is one of the most overrated players in European football.

“When things are going well and you have a lot of possession he’s a good player, but when push comes to shove you don’t see him.

“(Naby) Keita is also a disappointment, [Jordan] Henderson is a worker. They need a player who can make the difference and give the team that extra something.”

I completely disagree that Thiago is not worth the hype – he just hasn’t been surrounded by quality to match his own.

Fabinho is the only midfielder at the club that is close to Thiago as far as quality is concerned but even the Brazilian has been guilty of inconsistent performances in recent games.

That said, Jurgen Klopp’s midfield desperately needs an injection of quality to ensure they can close the gap between them and Manchester City as far as controlling games is concerned.
