Sir Alex Ferguson has launched a scathing attack on Arsenal’s performance in the Champions League Final, labelling the Gunners “boring” in a private message.
The former Manchester United manager sent a text to PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi following his club’s penalty shoot-out victory over Arsenal in Budapest.
L’Equipe claims Ferguson got in touch with Al-Khelaifi to pass on his congratulations after the dramatic final concluded in a shoot-out.
Kai Havertz’s early strike for Arsenal was cancelled out by Ousmane Dembele’s second half spot kick, sending the match to penalties.
Echebere Eze and Gabriel were the two Arsenal players to miss from 12 yards, ending Mikel Arteta’s side’s hopes of securing a Double.
Arteta’s side managed less than 25 per cent of possession across 120 minutes, with their goal being their only shot on target throughout the entire match.
Ferguson, who won the competition twice with Manchester United, made his feelings about Arsenal’s approach very clear in the message to Al-Khelaifi.
His text read: “Nasser, this is Alex Ferguson. Well done, it was a tough night for you, but you played against a boring team that did nothing but defend. Enjoy your holidays, you deserve it.”
PSG’s Joao Neves also took aim at Arsenal’s style of play in the aftermath of the Ligue 1 club’s victory over the Premier League champions.
Neves said: “The emotion is there. It’s the second time I’ve been a European champion. It’s not even the victory itself that pleases me, but playing with such teammates, this staff, and this management.”
The PSG midfielder was emphatic in his praise for his club’s attacking intent throughout the contest in Budapest.
Neves added: “Coming here was the best decision I’ve ever made. I love everything here. We deserved it today, because PSG were the only team that wanted to play.”
The victory marked the second consecutive Champions League triumph for Luis Enrique’s PSG side, cementing their status as Europe’s dominant force.
