Federico Chiesa Champions League squad chance emerges after Giovanni Leoni injury

Federico Chiesa has had a decent start to the season following an underwhelming year under Arne Slot. The Euro 2020 winner was hailed for a higher role at Anfield, but still hasn’t lived up to the expectations.

Liverpool signed Chiesa last summer as Arne Slot played out his first summer in England. It was a very modest transfer window in comparison to the shenanigans of this year.

The Reds spent £12.5m to sign the 27-year-old winger who was shown out by Juventus. Following the appointment of Thiago Motta, Chiesa was informed of his place in the Brazilian’s plans.

Unfortunately, the Italian had to leave his home country to continue his career elsewhere, as Motta had another plan in his mind.

Federico only managed to score three goals and also assist thrice over his 19 appearances last season.

The worst was yet to come, though, as Arne Slot chose teenage sensation Rio Ngumoha over the Italian for the UEFA Champions League A List squad.

Despite the setback, Chiesa decided to keep his head down and work his way through at Anfield. Fortunately, the 27-year-old might’ve stumbled upon a break he was long looking for.

Giovanni Leoni was injured in a recent Carabao Cup clash against Southampton. Slot is now only left with three defenders, but for Chiesa, a space has opened up where he can claim a space in Liverpool’s glory.

The Reds beat Atlético de Madrid in their first UEFA Champions League clash of the season. Virgil van Dijk sealed the deal in injury time as the Dutch defender headed one in off Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner.

Federico Chiesa is ready for the Champions League

This season has been a bit different, though, for Chiesa. Despite only having played 47 minutes in the English Premier League, he has already netted one for the Reds this season.

Liverpool’s first game against Bournemouth was a stalemate as both sides were fighting for a goal till the 88th minute. Unfortunately for the Cherries, Chiesa proved saviour as the Italian helped the Merseysiders salvage three points from the game.

“I can play more in this competition, but I want to show the manager I can play more in the Premier League. The coach gave me chances in the first four games, and I think I showed I can help the team. I’m not in the Champions League squad, but I am focused on the Carabao Cup”, Chiesa told the press.
