Our View: Official Manchester City announcement further embarrasses Liverpool’s transfer activity

Manchester City have renewed Ederson’s contract after Ruben Dias was offered a new deal following John Stones’ extension.

The Premier League champions have acted with authority to tie their key defensive players down to new deals as well as signing Jack Grealish for £100million.

They also tried to sign Harry Kane for well over £120m and were in talks to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.

Yet, Liverpool’s contract extensions for the likes of Virgil van Dijk have been used as a reason to explain away the Reds’ lack of transfers this summer.

However, clearly, with City handing out new contracts and going on in the transfer market as per usual, it shouldn’t be an issue for a club like Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp will argue (and has already in multiple interviews) that if he could have improved his squad with a single signing, he would have done so.

But the fact that the German was unable to influence the game against a 10-man Chelsea side with his substitutions speaks volumes.

The season has just begun but the lack of attacking depth that was an issue last season is still a major problem and it’s one that fans, pundits and journalists have been able to see plain as day the whole summer.

Manchester City announcing Ederson’s contract extension shows that Liverpool’s contract renewals shouldn’t have held them back from improving the squad.

That doesn’t take away from the importance of keeping the likes of van Dijk at the club but doing so during the transfer window was unnecessary especially given the lack of incomings.

FSG are luckier than they realise that Jurgen Klopp is in charge of their football club because there isn’t a single manager on the face of the planet that could achieve so much with so little.

Yet he has done so from the very minute he was appointed.
