Alexander Isak moved to Liverpool for a British record-breaking fee of £125m. The Swedish striker had been eyeing a move to Anfield for a long time as he helped Newcastle United win the EFL Cup against the Reds last season.
The player’s actions have caused outrage among the Toons’ fans. He was very vocal about his dissatisfaction in Tynesaid, following claims about ‘promises’ not being met.
With three more years remaining on his contract, it was difficult to salvage a move in these conditions. The player was already earning a reported £120,000 a week at St. James Park.
In a bid to extend his contract, a demand of £300,000 a week was made. This was firmly rejected by the club, which led to the player pushing for a move away from Tyneside in the summer.
The player didn’t train or play any games with the first team since the 2025/26 pre-season. This led to tensions growing exponentially between Isak and Newcastle.
The last nail in the coffin was his social media callout aimed at the club, claiming ‘promises’ were being broken. The salary increase was probably one of the biggest parts of the claim.

Dan Burn talks about the Alexander Isak saga

Interestingly, Dan Burn recently opened up by commenting on the saga. The English defender told the media that there are no hard feelings between the players.
The defender respects Isak’s decision, and the Swede also sent out a last message on the club’s WhatsApp group addressed to his teammates.
“Alex is my mate at the end of the day, so it was a tough situation, but I’m glad that we’re getting a good return on a player that we’ve had, and he’s getting the move that he wanted.”
“He put a message in the chat just saying that he was leaving, and thanks for the memories, all that sort of stuff, and the lads replied. Yeah, of course (it was all positive).”
“But as I said, I think Alex is getting what he wants, and now we’ve just got to focus and do what we can with the players that we’ve got.”
“It has brought us closer, really. I’m not silly, I’ve been around football a long time and people have short careers. They want to max out absolutely everything they can, so there’s no hard feelings from me. I have nothing but good wishes for Alex. I understand why our fans are frustrated, but there is no animosity”, Burn explained to the media.
