Former Chelsea star Craig Burley has reacted to the suggestion that Liverpool might sign Christian Pulisic from the Blues.
The Reds almost signed the American before he signed for Chelsea just like they almost did with Timo Werner and with the USMNT star underperforming for the Londoners, Burley says suggestions have been made he could move to Anfield.
in 2018, Paul Joyce stated that the reason Liverpool passed up on signing Pulisic was his low attacking output for Borussia Dortmund. He scored just 5 goals and got just 7 assists in the 2017/18 season leading up to that summer.
Liverpool made the right decision as his best season came in the 2019/20 campaign when he got 11 goals and 10 assists and the Reds won the Premier League that season, proving they didn’t need his attacking output even when he was able to produce it.
This season, with Chelsea struggling for attacking fluidity, Pulisic has failed to step up and deliver which is a worrying sign for Blues fans. He’s got just 3 goals and 3 assist this season.
Bear in mind that he cost the Stamford Bridge outfit €69.3million (£58m) and has so far been unable to match the initial expectations.
That all said, I do believe Jurgen Klopp could get the best out of him and I think a front three of Christian Pulisic, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah would be quite something but Chelsea would fleece Liverpool as they’re direct rivals.
The German has a knack for getting 120% out of his attackers and I believe he could have done the same with Pulisic and potentially even made him world class.
Burley doesn’t think it will happen anyway and neither do I.
“It’s not easy if you don’t get a run in the side,” said the ex-Chelsea midfielder on Pulisic’s possible departure while speaking on ESPN after a supporter sent in a question for the 50-year-old to answer.
“However, against Liverpool, he was having a terrible game and he scored. Then he gets a game or two, then he starts falling over the ball and he’s unconvincing and he (Tuchel) has to take him back out.
“So, he has to stay there for the time being but please, please, please, these Pulisic people need to get their head out of cloud cuckoo land.
“He isn’t going to Liverpool, because he isn’t getting a game there either. Let’s be clear, if he leaves there, he’s going somewhere like (Aston) Villa or an Everton. He’s not going from Chelsea to Liverpool.
“That’s pie in the sky stuff. Unless someone wants to take him to be on the bench. Where the hell is he going to play at Liverpool?
“When are these people who follow Pulisic like he’s the second coming of God going to realise he’s just another player like the rest of them.”
