“Alarm has sounded” over bidding war for £20m giant and LFC will come out on top

MUNICH, GERMANY - AUGUST 16: Marko Grujic of Hertha BSC celebrates after scoring his team's second goal during the Bundesliga match between FC Bayern Muenchen and Hertha BSC at Allianz Arena on August 16, 2019 in Munich, Germany.

Marko Grujic is set to spark a bidding war and with Liverpool looking to get £20million for his services, they are more than happy to allow clubs to drive up the price.

The Liverpool Echo reports that after an impressive season with Porto in which he and his teammates eliminated Juventus from the UEFA Champions League, Grujic is attracting a lot of attention.

Porto and Hertha Berlin are set to go head to head over the Serbian midfielder, with CM Journal claiming that an ‘alarm has sounded’ at Porto over interest in Grujic and as far as Liverpool securing maximum return on investment in the 6 ft 3 giant is concerned, Michael Edwards will come out on top.

The Anfield sporting director has not only pulled off some incredible signings for the club but he has also managed to get unbelievable fees for players in the past that he had no right getting.

£19million for Dominic Solanke, £23.5million for Rhian Brewster, £15million for Jordon Ibe, £6m for Brad Smith.

These are just a few of Edwards’ best deals in the recent past and with great interest being shown in Grujic, it will be easy to achieve the £20million fee that the Echo claims the Reds want.

He played 41 games for Porto and really blossomed with the Portuguese side and with two years remaining on his Liverpool deal, it’s the perfect time for the club to sell him to make the most from his exit.

It’s a pity he’s never been able to kick on at Anfield especially given he was Jurgen Klopp’s first transfer but with the German manager looking to win the Champions League and the Premier League, he can’t hold on to players that don’t match the club’s ambition.

While Georginio Wijnaldum is set to join PSG after a crazy turn of events, there is still no room for Marko Grujic in Klopp’s squad with the former Red Star midfielder simply not the type of player that is needed at Liverpool these days.

I do wish we’d have more height in our midfield but with Virgil van Dijk (6ft4) and Ibrahima Konate (6ft3) set to star at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield next season, they can make do without giants in midfield.

Fabinho (6ft1) and Jordan Henderson (6ft) are fairly tall so it’s actually really only Thiago that isn’t and he actually surprised me this season by holding his own in aerial battles.

Thiago had a 50% aerial duel win rate while Fabinho, who is five inches taller, only bettered that slightly with a 50.94% win rate.

Liverpool are an interesting prospect ahead of next season as Ibra Konate is set to debut, multiple injured players are set to return and the front three gets a rest for the first time in ages.

Jurgen Klopp will be desperate to see his side bounce back and with the talent available, there is no reason why they shouldn’t.
