After being transfer-listed by Liverpool, 26-year-old reported for pre-season on Monday – Klopp ready to sell

Ben Davies

Liverpool will sell Ben Davies this summer if an offer is received but the 26-year-old dutifully reported for pre-season on Monday.

Signed from Preston North End during one of the most unprecedented injury crises in recent Liverpool history, he has been unable to make the cut at Anfield.

Liverpool fans remember the 2020/21 season as one of the most disappointing as there was so much promise at the start of the campaign only for injuries to ruin it all.

How injuries decimated Liverpool title defence in 2020

Following the Reds’ incredible 99-point Premier League campaign, many supporters were hopeful of Klopp’s side making it back-to-back title wins.

And it wasn’t just optimism and confidence spilling over from the previous season – Liverpool were top of the table until Matchweek 18 before injuries took their toll.

Virgil van Dijk almost had his leg snapped by Jordan Pickford while Joe Gomez suffered a nasty patellar tendon rupture.

Joel Matip, meanwhile, sustained an ankle ligament injury.

All three missed the rest of the season.

Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak join Liverpool

With Liverpool floundering later in the season, it was crucial that the Reds use the transfer window to fix their backline.

Ozan Kabak was taken on loan from Schalke while Davies joined on a permanent move to Anfield yet he has not played a single game for Liverpool since.

The 26-year-old spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Preston North End but a report from the Liverpool Echo in June stated he will be allowed to leave.

It’s a sad way for his dream move to come to an end but unfortunately, the no.24 simply isn’t good enough to oust the likes of Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate from the starting XI.

Let alone Virgil van Dijk.

Davies reports for pre-season amid exit links

While he is likely to be sold this summer, Davies reported for pre-season at the AXA Training Centre on Monday along with his teammates.

Beyond the four senior centre-backs that Klopp relied on last summer, the German can still call on Sepp van den Berg and Rhys Williams.

Nat Phillips is also an option and he wowed fans with his display against AC Milan last season.

After Bournemouth were promoted back to the Premier League thanks to help from Phillips, he rejoined the Liverpool ranks.
