Report: Arsenal vs. Liverpool could be postponed despite contradictory Gunners transfer activity

Mikel Arteta

Arsenal are reportedly ‘concerned’ that they will not have enough players to field a side to face Liverpool on Thursday.

The two sides are set to lock horns again in the EFL Cup semi-finals after the first leg was postponed after Liverpool were ordered to close their training ground due to a Covid-19 outbreak.

Local authorities issued the order but Jurgen Klopp admitted that many of the tests returned as ‘false positives’ and as this is obviously hugely improbable, it sparked a huge outcry among rival fans on social media.

The game went ahead and despite Granit Xhaka’s first-half red card, Liverpool were unable to break down the visitors without Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Thiago Alcantara in the side.

According to an iNEws reveal, Arsenal “are still uncertain if they will be able to fulfil their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool on Thursday.”

The Gunners were successful with their postponement request to the Premier League on the weekend as they were set to face North London rivals Tottenham despite having just one Covid-19 case.

The Athletic reports that since the postponement, the Gunners have recorded a second case.

Arsenal’s transfer activity is being scrutinised amidst all this drama as Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Folarin Balogun have been sent out on loan to AS Roma and Middlesbrough respectively while Pablo Mari has been sent out on loan to Udinese.

The Premier League’s postponement rules are becoming a joke as clubs are now using them as a way to avoid playing games when they’re not suitable.

They need to be adjusted to only take into account Covid-19 cases and not injuries.

Hopefully, Arsenal are able to field a strong team and the game goes ahead because the first leg was fiercely fought and it would be a shame for Liverpool to progress to the final due to a technicality.
