Liverpool were held to a 0-0 stalemate against Leeds United as their 4-game winning streak came to an end. Liverpool seemed clueless at times against a resolute Leeds United.
Arne Slot delivered a frank assessment after his Liverpool side were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Leeds United at Anfield. The result halted a four-game winning run and left the manager to dissect a familiar problem: breaking down a stubborn, deep-lying defence.
The Dutchman’s post-match verdict was blunt. When asked what was missing, he offered a simple start: “A goal… that’s the most simple answer.”
He elaborated on the tactical challenge Leeds posed, noting the limited ways to unlock such a setup. “To create chances against a low block you need pace, individual special moments to create an overload. You don’t see a lot of 15-to-20-passes goals against low blocks.”
Liverpool’s moments of the game
Slot pointed to moments where his team could have done more, particularly in the first half. “I said to them at half-time [that] we can bring more bodies in the box than we in moments did,” he explained.[smartframe_images_embed customer-id=”04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93″ image-id=”neimNPKwrBBn” style=”width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2693px; aspect-ratio: 2693/2154;”]
A key talking point was a first-half incident involving Hugo Ekitike, who stayed on his feet under a challenge from Jaka Bijol. Slot suggested a pattern of decisions may have influenced the striker’s reaction.
“When he would have fallen down, that would probably be a penalty,” Slot said. “But I can understand why he doesn’t go down, because this season so many times when we were fouled inside the 18-yard box, we didn’t get a penalty.”

He cited specific examples, adding, “Maybe as a result of that, our players try to do everything to stay on their feet.”
Van Dijk’s assessment
Captain Virgil van Dijk echoed the sentiment that the final quality was lacking. “I think we didn’t create enough chances to deserve a win,” the defender stated. “I think we were not great in our last part of our game.”[smartframe_images_embed customer-id=”04742eb90cefa12a5e3ab9bae92c2b93″ image-id=”neimUdunisqj” style=”width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2613px; aspect-ratio: 2613/1745;”]
Not all bleak for Liverpool
Looking at the broader campaign, Slot did not sound upbeat. Assessing the first 19 games, he described a relentless grind. “Every single game we play, it’s hard work, it’s two teams quite close to each other,” he said.
While the team is now eight games unbeaten, he cautioned against overstatement: “If you say this you feel like ‘wow, they are flying through the league’, but that’s not what we’re doing.”
His summary was clear. The first half of the season has been “a constant battle…sometimes a bit lucky, sometimes a bit unlucky.” The challenge for Slot is to find a way to turn these tight, battling performances into more convincing victories as the season enters its second phase.
