Arne Slot defends record-breaking summer spending (Credits: Imago Images)
Liverpool spent more than any other English Premier League club in history during the summer transfer window. Around £450m was spent on a revamp as Arne Slot finally decided to make a statement this window.
There were two record-breaking signings during the summer. The first one saw Florian Wirtz make his way to Anfield as the Reds paid £116m for the services of the German.
The deadline day was another enticing 24 hours as Alexander Isak left Newcastle United in a deal worth £125m. These two players have become the cover story for Liverpool’s summer spent.
Both players come in with heightened expectations as they’ll need to prove their worth against hefty prices. Luckily, Wirtz and Isak had a decent night at Anfield against Atlético de Madrid as the Reds secured a 3-2 win in their opening Champions League matchup.
The German created the most chances than any other player on the pitch, but was unfortunate enough to register no goals or assists.
Alexander Isak made his debut against the Spanish giants as he seemed to be combining well with the other players. Of course, the Swede still has time to adapt, but he has taken a step in the right direction tonight.

Arne Slot says Dominik Szoboszlai is worth £100m

Liverpool did evidently spend big through the summer, but Slot feels that the media keeps cherry-picking the amount with respect to the players they actually sold.
“There’s so much focus on our new signings and especially pundits who favour, not us, but some other clubs in the country that cannot stop talking about £450 million. I repeat £450 million, £450 million, but always forget the £300 million that we’ve sold.”
The Dutchman believes that there is no emphasis on the outgoing business, as most of the funding arose through the offloading of unrequired players.
But the manager also looked at the other side, as he claimed that it is a good thing. He believes that the prices they paid for the players do reflect their respective potential.
“I think it is only a compliment that people tell everyone we have spent so much because that tells you the players we brought in are seen as very good players.”
“These players we’ve brought in are a lot of money, but are playing now with players worth the same amount of money. If we want to strengthen the squad, we have to spend that money. If we were to sell Dominik Szoboszlai tomorrow, he’d be worth £100 million as well”, Slot told the media.
