Ange Postecoglou has made a sentimental return to one of football’s most storied venues, training at Lisbon’s Estadio Nacional with his new club Al Nassr.
The 60-year-old was recently appointed head coach of the newly-crowned Saudi Pro League champions, replacing Jorge Jesus at the helm.
Postecoglou had been away from management since being sacked just 39 days into his tenure at Nottingham Forest last October.
The Australian coach has since signed a money-spinning two-year deal with Nassr, putting him in charge of all-time great Cristiano Ronaldo.
He will also oversee a star-studded squad featuring Sadio Mane, Kingsley Coman, and Joao Felix as Nassr push for further silverware.
Postecoglou had briefly stepped into punditry with ITV during the World Cup before returning to club management in Saudi Arabia.
The Estadio Nacional holds an almost mythical significance for Celtic supporters, as the venue where Jock Stein’s Lisbon Lions lifted the European Cup in 1967.
That triumph made Celtic the first British club to win the competition, and the stadium has since become a place of pilgrimage for generations of Hoops fans.
Pictures shared on Al Nassr’s social media showed Postecoglou emerging from the very tunnel where Bertie Auld famously burst into a rousing version of the Celtic Song before Stein’s side defeated Inter Milan.
The current Celtic squad even recreated Billy McNeill’s iconic trophy lift at the same ground during last summer’s pre-season trip, underlining the stadium’s enduring connection with the club.
Postecoglou delivered five trophies, including a Treble, during his unforgettable two-year spell at Parkhead before departing for Tottenham.
Al Nassr’s pre-season training camp in Portugal has been scheduled with purpose, with fixtures lined up against Benfica B, Merida AD, and Estrela da Amadora.
The Portuguese camp represents one of the first major steps in what will be an intense and highly scrutinised new era under Postecoglou’s management.
Having walked in the footsteps of the Lisbon Lions, Postecoglou will now be focused on building a winning culture at one of world football’s most high-profile clubs.
