Aberdeen are pushing to seal a transfer deal for Austrian holding midfielder Alexander Briedl, according to Record Sport.
The Dons are looking to sign the 24-year-old from FC Blau Weiss Linz, where he has been one of the standout performers in the Austrian Bundesliga.
Briedl is set to become a free agent this summer following BW Linz’s relegation, and Austrian sources have confirmed Aberdeen are well-positioned to clinch a quick deal.
The move is subject to a visa being issued, but the Pittodrie club are understood to be moving with urgency to secure his signature.
The situation carries echoes of how Aberdeen previously signed Ylber Ramadani from MTK Budapest under similar free-agent circumstances.
The club has struggled to adequately fill the defensive midfield role ever since Ramadani was sold to Lecce back in 2023.
Briedl boasts some of the best pressing statistics in the Austrian Bundesliga, and manager Stephen Robinson believes he could be central to how he wants his Aberdeen side to play.
The midfielder came through the youth ranks at Red Bull Salzburg before beginning his professional career with FC Leifering and SV Horn, then moving to BW Linz in 2020.
Record Sport has also previously reported that Aberdeen are set to sign Brad Lyons and Lewis Mayo from Kilmarnock, with both players arriving as free agents this summer.
The Northern Irish international midfielder and defender will move to Pittodrie as part of what is expected to be a major turnaround at Cormack Park.
Robinson is focused on building a stronger spine within his squad by incorporating British know-how, believing this approach is the best way to stabilise Aberdeen as a top-six side.
The manager also believes that foundation will allow some of the club’s foreign talents to flourish in the longer term.
The summer clearout is already underway, with former captain Graeme Shinnie heading a list of players who have departed on freedom of contract.
Aberdeen are also prepared to listen to offers for a number of contracted players, with Alexander Jensen, Nicolas Milanovic, Marko Lazetic, and Ante Palaversa all attracting interest from elsewhere.
Robinson has been told that if he wants to make any substantial bids in the transfer market, he must generate the majority of the required funds from within the club.
