Scotland Under-21 manager Tony Docherty has handed a call-up to Rangers midfielder Kyle Glasgow, accelerating the 16-year-old into senior international football.
Glasgow, born on 20 February 2010, is currently on a co-operation loan at League One side Alloa Athletic, where he has scored three goals in 10 appearances.
The teenager has made an immediate impression in his first taste of senior football, demonstrating he can handle the physical demands of men’s competitive play.
Docherty, the former Dundee and Ross County manager, pointed to Glasgow as a prime example of the SFA’s co-operation loan scheme working as intended.
“Kyle’s a really good example of how the co-operation loans have worked,” Docherty said, expressing clear enthusiasm for the youngster’s development trajectory.
“It’s important for young players that show that high potential to then go out and get minutes in a competitive environment in men’s football. That’s what he’s doing.”
Docherty added: “I’ve seen him a couple of times and he’s dealing with real football. He’s a really talented boy.”
Before joining Alloa, Glasgow had already been training regularly with the Rangers first-team squad and was included in a European squad under manager Derek McInnes.
The young forward was a prominent member of Rangers’ Under-17 and Under-19 title-winning sides last season, scoring more than 20 goals across both age groups and featuring for the Under-19s while still only 15.
Glasgow now stands on the verge of becoming the youngest goalscorer in Scotland youth international history, with a record within reach if he finds the net against Azerbaijan.
Ben Gannon-Doak currently holds the record, having scored against Northern Ireland in September 2022 at 16 years and 315 days old.
If Glasgow scores against Azerbaijan, he would claim the milestone at just 16 years and 222 days, eclipsing Gannon-Doak’s long-standing benchmark by a significant margin.
Scotland’s Under-21 side face Azerbaijan at Rugby Park on September 30 before travelling to Bulgaria on October 6, with European Championship 2027 qualification firmly in the balance.
Glasgow signed his first professional contract at Ibrox earlier this year, committing his future to Rangers despite reported interest from clubs in England.
His rapid progression from academy prospect to senior loan player to international call-up underlines the depth of belief Rangers and the SFA share in his long-term potential.
