Dundee’s mounting injury problems have taken another serious turn after two players were hurt during a closed-door friendly against Falkirk.
Defender Joe Wright and attacker Charlie Reilly both sustained injuries in the bounce game, leaving manager Steven Pressley with an increasingly stretched squad.
Wright, a new signing, has suffered a hamstring tear that will sideline him for a number of weeks, dealing a significant blow to Dundee’s defensive options.
Reilly fractured his toe during the same match and faces up to three weeks on the sidelines, compounding what is already a difficult period for the club.
Pressley confirmed the extent of the damage, saying: “From an injury perspective, things are not very good just now. We had a pre-arranged bounce game on Thursday against Falkirk.”
The manager explained the original purpose of the fixture was to help players build fitness, but the match ultimately created more problems than it solved.
Pressley added: “We still need certain players to get up to speed physically. Some of the new players that have just come in, it was an opportunity to get them minutes, but we have ended up with a couple of casualties from that game as well.”
On the individual setbacks, Pressley said: “Joe Wright has a bit of a hamstring problem that could keep him out for a number of weeks. Joe has had a scan, so we know the sort of time scale we are facing there.”
Pressley also addressed Reilly’s condition directly, stating: “Charlie Reilly also fractured his toe and he will be missing for a number of weeks. It looks like he could be out for up to three weeks. He had to come off in the game. It is very like Ash Hay’s injury from last season. He really struggled. The list gets longer.”
The injury list at Dens Park was already severe before the Falkirk friendly added to the club’s woes this week.
Captain Simon Murray and Fin Robertson are both sidelined for the entire season after suffering ACL injuries, removing two important figures from Pressley’s plans.
Joe Westley has also been ruled out after breaking his cheekbone, while Ash Hay continues his return to fitness following his own injury struggles.
The accumulation of serious injuries across the squad leaves Pressley with limited options as he attempts to navigate a challenging period for the Dundee football club.
