Derek McInnes’ side secured their place in the semi-finals with a dominant derby performance that sent the home support into a frenzy of celebration.
Dan Neil scored twice either side of a Kevin Kelsy goal to seal a resounding win that continued the club’s impressive recent run of form.
It was Rangers’ fifth consecutive victory under McInnes, and arguably his most significant result since taking charge of the club.
The win has helped steady the ship at Ibrox after what had been a turbulent start to the season for the Gers and their new manager.
Gerrard kept a low profile throughout the match, wearing a baseball cap and avoiding the cameras present for Premier Sports’ broadcast coverage.
After the final whistle, however, the former Rangers boss surfaced on social media with a series of photographs showing him celebrating alongside his former players.
He shared a photo with popular ex-Ranger Scott Arfield, who had also made the trip to Ibrox to enjoy the occasion alongside Gerrard.
Gerrard also posted a snap on his Instagram story with Andy Halliday, and the image was accompanied by Roy Orbison’s Penny Arcade, a beloved Ibrox terrace anthem.
The song had gone viral earlier in the week when McInnes was filmed fist-bumping along to a rendition of it during Rangers’ win over St Mirren.
Fans were quick to interpret Gerrard’s use of the song as a deliberate nod of support toward the current Rangers manager, though nothing has been confirmed.
Whether it was a calculated show of solidarity from one former Ibrox boss to the next, or simply a coincidence, the Rangers support has been lapping it up regardless.
