Robbie Ure made a bold decision as a teenager when he turned down a Rangers contract, believing the opportunity to develop there simply was not right for him.
The 22-year-old felt that his chances of progressing at Ibrox were limited, prompting him to seek a different path toward professional football.
Ure departed Rangers and moved to Anderlecht in Belgium, taking his career in a direction that few could have predicted at the time.
He later moved to Swedish club Sirius, where his form exploded in spectacular fashion during the opening half of the season.
Ure scored 15 goals in that first half of the campaign, a remarkable return that immediately attracted attention from clubs across Europe.
That stunning form led Spanish giants Sevilla to spend £9m on the young Scottish forward, a transformative move for a player who had been released without fanfare.
Not a single Scottish club will see any financial return from his remarkable rise, highlighting the stark cost of losing promising young talent at an early stage.
It was Rangers’ former academy director Mulholland who Ure informed of his decision to seek pastures new back in 2023, a conversation that now carries significant weight.
Ure reflected honestly on his time at Ibrox, saying: “Of course, up until I was 19 Rangers was all I ever knew. I feel like the opportunity, if it was to ever come in the future, to go back there would be something I would really think about. It would mean a lot to a lot of people.”
He also hinted that there could be “some unfinished business” between himself and the Glasgow club, leaving the door open for a potential future return.
At Sevilla, Ure will sign a five-year contract and operate out of the famous Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium in southern Spain.
He is set to become only the third Scottish player ever to represent Sevilla, a historic distinction that underlines just how far he has come.
Ure made a direct promise to his new supporters upon completing the move, declaring: “You’re going to have someone who will give everything for this club.”
His story now serves as a striking case study in the risks of academy mismanagement, and the potential consequences when young talent walks out the door unnoticed.
