Rangers are closing in on the signing of England international Ben Godfrey on loan from Italian Serie A club Atalanta this summer.
New Ibrox manager Derek McInnes has made the 28-year-old centre-back a priority target and is hopeful of completing a deal ahead of the new season.
Godfrey joined Atalanta from Everton for £11 million in 2024 but has spent much of his time away on loan since making the move to Italy.
He has had loan spells at Ipswich Town, Sheffield United, and Danish club Brondby since arriving at the Serie A outfit.
The defender holds two senior England caps and is contracted at Atalanta through to 2028, making a temporary move to Ibrox an attractive option for all parties.
McInnes is under pressure to bolster his defensive options after a series of departures left the squad short of cover at the back.
Max Aarons, Nasser Djiga, and Derek Cornelius all returned to their parent clubs this summer, leaving a clear gap in the defensive ranks.
Former Rangers captain James Tavernier has also departed the club, adding further urgency to McInnes’s recruitment drive.
The new Ibrox manager has already moved to strengthen his squad, bringing in Ross McCrorie from Bristol City for around £1.5 million.
Godfrey is now expected to be the next arrival at Rangers, with a season-long loan deal anticipated to be finalised in the coming days.
The defender first made his name at Norwich City before earning a £20 million transfer to Everton in the Premier League, establishing himself as a top-flight centre-back.
After four years at Goodison Park, Godfrey made the move to Atalanta, and his most recent loan spell was with Brondby in Denmark.
McInnes has now moved decisively to bring the experienced international defender to Glasgow for the start of the new campaign.
