Departing Rangers manager Danny Rohl was desperate to leave the club, according to a bold claim from a prominent football pundit.
TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook has alleged that the 37-year-old German manager actively wanted out of Rangers as he closes in on becoming Red Bull Salzburg’s new boss.
The claim emerged alongside a strong defence of Russell Martin, who has been named as a new managerial appointment at Leicester.
Crook posted on X, saying: “Russell Martin is a terrific appointment for Leicester. He did a brilliant job taking Southampton into the top league but given no resource to keep them there.”
He continued: “Not perfect at Rangers, squad was terrible as Danny Rohl also found and couldn’t wait to jump ship. Will be good to watch.”
The comments paint a picture of a manager who had grown disillusioned at Ibrox despite public backing from Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh.
Cavenagh had openly supported Rohl even as Rangers suffered four consecutive defeats after the league split, derailing their pursuit of the Premiership title.
Despite that chairman backing, ongoing speculation about Rohl’s future persisted before Red Bull ultimately made their move to bring him back into their coaching network.
Derek McInnes is set to succeed Rohl at Rangers, signing a three-year deal to take charge of the club going forward.
Rohl’s return to the Red Bull umbrella marks a significant chapter in his managerial career, having previously worked within their network before his spell in Scotland.
Crook’s remarks also drew attention to the quality of the Rangers squad, which he branded as “terrible,” suggesting the playing resources available contributed to the club’s struggles.
The suggestion that both Rohl and Martin faced similar challenges in terms of squad depth adds further context to a turbulent period for both managers.
Rangers supporters will now look to McInnes to stabilise the club and rebuild momentum after a disappointing end to the most recent domestic season.
