Scotland captain John McGinn delivered a moment of pure class following his country’s opening World Cup victory over Haiti in Boston.
McGinn scored the only goal of a nervy contest, securing Scotland’s first World Cup win in 36 years and sending the Tartan Army into raptures.
The victory puts Scotland in a strong position in their group, with a point against either Morocco or Brazil enough to reach the knockout stages for the first time ever.
Despite the atmosphere of celebration in the camp, McGinn took time to go out of his way for a pitchside reporter after the final whistle.
Presenter Carrie Brown, who conducted pitchside interviews for beIN Sports, revealed the gesture on social media after the game.
Brown described a sequence of events that UK cameras missed entirely, painting a picture of a player who puts others before himself even in the biggest moments.
She tweeted: “Classic John McGinn moment post match. Kindly came to do our interview but camera was taken, went to Fox, popped in to get MOTM FIFA photo, waited patiently for us again and then apologised for coming back and forth. Ended the interview with the eyes (his iconic celebration)! Never change.”
The post quickly spread across social media, with Scotland supporters celebrating McGinn not just for his goal but for his character off the pitch.
It was not the only McGinn-related moment to go viral after the game, as transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano found himself in an embarrassing position.
Romano tweeted congratulations to “Scott McGinn” on being named man of the match, a post that was swiftly deleted once the error was noticed.
McGinn himself saw the funny side of the mix-up, responding with a sharp and witty reply that landed perfectly with fans online.
He posted in reply: “Just as well I don’t get any moves big man.”
The response drew widespread laughter and admiration, further cementing McGinn’s reputation as one of the most likeable figures in Scottish football.
Scotland now look ahead to their remaining group games knowing that a positive result against Morocco or Brazil could make history for the national side.
