Celtic are among a host of clubs targeting Alfie Devine, the 21-year-old Tottenham Hotspur midfielder currently attracting significant transfer interest.
The young midfielder spent last season on loan at Preston North End and has just one year remaining on his contract at Spurs.
Preston have triggered an option to buy Devine for a fee of £6 million, which they are reported to be looking to pay in instalments.
Devine is now free to hold talks with Preston, but the level of wider interest in him has complicated the situation considerably.
Recently relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers are among the clubs keen on the midfielder, with up to eight clubs understood to be circling.
That significant level of interest has encouraged Tottenham to pursue a larger fee from other interested parties than the one agreed with Preston.
Celtic are named as one of those clubs, with the Hoops firmly in the mix as competition for his signature grows.
Devine is considered unlikely to receive much first-team opportunity next season under Roberto Di Zerbi and is expected to depart before pre-season gets underway.
He holds a notable place in Tottenham’s history, becoming the club’s youngest scorer when he netted as a 16-year-old in their FA Cup victory over Marine in 2021.
Since that milestone, he has gained experience through loan spells at Port Vale, Plymouth, and Westerlo before his most recent stint at Preston North End.
