Eddie Howe has admitted he does not know whether Anthony Gordon has already played his last game for Newcastle United, casting serious doubt over the winger’s future at the club.
The Newcastle manager gave a candid response when asked by Sky Sports whether Gordon’s time at St. James’ Park could be finished after a difficult end to the season.
Howe said: “I don’t know. You can never predict what’s going to happen. He goes to the World Cup now, so we wish him well.”
Gordon, 25, did not feature in any of Newcastle’s final four Premier League matches, raising questions about his standing within the squad during the closing weeks of the campaign.
The situation drew further attention when Gordon remained an unused substitute during Newcastle’s 2-0 defeat away to Fulham on the final day of the Premier League season.
Howe opted to introduce 18-year-old Sean Neave from the bench during that match rather than turning to Gordon, a decision that did not go unnoticed given the winger’s profile at the club.
Bayern Munich have emerged as strong contenders to sign Gordon, with reports indicating the German club have held serious interest in acquiring the England international this summer.
Newcastle reportedly value Gordon at around £75 million, and one report stated that Gordon had already agreed personal terms with Bayern ahead of a potential transfer.
Gordon arrived at Newcastle from Everton and quickly established himself as one of the club’s most dangerous attacking players, known for his pace, directness and energy in wide areas.
Selling Gordon would hand Newcastle a significant financial boost, though it would also mean losing one of their most effective forwards heading into what could be a pivotal summer rebuild.
Gordon will now join the England squad for the World Cup, temporarily removing him from the immediate transfer picture while negotiations between clubs potentially continue in the background.
Howe’s public uncertainty over Gordon’s future reflects the complexity of the situation, with the winger’s Newcastle career appearing to hang in the balance as the transfer window approaches.
