The Mohamed Salah chaos in the last 24 hours has shifted the focus away from the contract mess around Trent Alexander-Arnold. The Liverpool star is yet to agree on a new deal and could leave Anfield on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Alexander-Arnold is the player Liverpool would want to hold on to the most given his age and his being one of the greatest success stories of the club’s academy.
However, the defender has continued to reject offers of a new deal while Real Madrid push to convince him to move to the Spanish capital in the next summer transfer window.
Liverpool are pushing the envelope to keep Alexander-Arnold at Anfield and are said to have offered him a contract that would make him the highest-paid player in the Premier League.
However, there is still no agreement and Real Madrid are growing increasingly confident about getting their hands on the defender on a free transfer.
Michael Owen is all too aware of the journey from Liverpool to Real Madrid and conceded that Alexander-Arnold would have to prepare himself for a backlash.
Trent Alexander-Arnold should be regarded as a hero no matter what happens

Owen’s move to Real Madrid in 2004 broke hearts on Merseyside and he never really won back the majority of the Liverpool fans ever.
Winning the Premier League with Manchester United didn’t help his cause but the original sin of abandoning the Reds for Real Madrid was never forgiven.

The former striker stressed that given what Alexander-Arnold has achieved in a Liverpool shirt, the Reds fans should not blame him if he moves to Real Madrid and insisted that he should remain a hero on Merseyside regardless.
However, Owen admitted that some Liverpool fans will change their view on him if he decides to move on from Anfield even if it feels unfair on the player.
“The Trent situation is an interesting one”, he told The Daily Telegraph.
“Trent has done everything for Liverpool. He adores Liverpool. If he goes, no one should begrudge him a different experience in his life and career.
“Whatever happens he should be regarded as a hero. Sadly, it does affect the way people view you. It will tarnish him in some eyes even though it shouldn’t.”
