Calvin Ramsay’s journey at Liverpool has been marked by both promise and adversity. The young right-back, who arrived at Anfield in 2022 with high expectations, has faced significant challenges due to injuries that disrupted his early career.
However, as Ramsay revealed in a recent interview with the Daily Record, it was the encouragement from former manager Jurgen Klopp that reignited his confidence and belief in his future at the club.
Ramsay was signed from Aberdeen for £4.5 million, bringing with him the accolade of Scottish Football Young Player of the Year for the 2021/22 season. He was seen as a talented prospect who could eventually compete with Trent Alexander-Arnold for the right-back position.
Unfortunately, his first season at Liverpool was hampered by two stress fractures in his back, followed by a knee injury that further delayed his progress and disrupted a loan move to Preston North End.
Despite these setbacks, Ramsay’s story is one of resilience, bolstered by Klopp’s unwavering support during a difficult time. In his interview, Ramsay reflected on a pivotal conversation he had with Klopp during his recovery, which left a lasting impact.
“Jurgen knew what it was like for a young player to go through injuries and pulled me into his office one day,” Ramsay shared. “He told me Liverpool weren’t going anywhere and reminded me that I had a long-term contract. He told me to get myself right, and when I was, Liverpool would still be there for me. That was so good to hear – and something I really needed.”
Klopp’s words did more than offer comfort; they were essential in rebuilding Ramsay’s mental and emotional strength. Known for his exceptional man-management skills, Klopp understood that young players dealing with injuries far from home need more than just physical recovery—they need reassurance and belief. This conversation more than likely helped restore Ramsay’s confidence, reaffirming his importance to the team despite his time on the sidelines.
“I knew that if I just did what I had to do in the next period of my career, I’d be back showing him what I could do,” Ramsay added, highlighting the positive mindset that Klopp had instilled in him.

With Klopp now departed and Arne Slot in charge at Liverpool, Ramsay faces a new challenge: proving himself to a new manager. Currently on loan at Wigan Athletic, the 21-year-old understands that this period is crucial for his development and his future at Anfield.
“Obviously Jurgen has left Liverpool and the new gaffer (Arne Slot) has come in. So I have to start again. So far, I haven’t been able to show him what I’ve got yet as I’m out on loan,” Ramsay acknowledged.
Despite the managerial change, Ramsay remains optimistic. His determination to earn his place back at Liverpool is evident, and he sees his loan spell as an opportunity to build his form and fitness. “There will be a time when I’m back at Liverpool working under him and showing what I can do on the pitch,” he concluded.
Ramsay’s resilience, combined with Klopp’s earlier support, has set the stage for his potential resurgence at Liverpool, even as he navigates the challenges of proving himself under a new regime.
