Liverpool could have signed 385-goal striker but he was a "risky bet"

Liverpool could have signed 385-goal striker but he was a "risky bet"

Sergio Aguero says he grew up as a Liverpool fan but that the Reds turned down the chance to sign him before his move to Manchester City.

Speaking in a recent interview with GOAL, the deadly striker revealed that he supported the club because of Michael Owen.

Aguero said: "I used to like Liverpool when I was younger because of [Michael] Owen, who had also started as a teenager. Even when I was playing on my Playstation, I tried to play like Owen!"

Now that I think about it, there are a lot of similarities between the two Premier League hitmen. Both are very short but rapid with deadly finishing that few have ever been able to match.

After retiring in 2021 due to heart health issues, Aguero ended his career with 385 goals for Independiente, Atletico Madrid, Manchester City and Barcelona.

If he supported Liverpool why did he never join the Reds?

After admitting he is a boyhood Liverpool fan, Aguero then revealed why he was never snapped up by the Reds.

He said: "I wouldn't know, really. I've read that they didn't go out for an offer because I was very young and it seemed like a risky bet for the transfer cost."

If that's true, it's a real pity. Aguero enjoyed huge success at Man City, of course, but it would have been quite something to see him at Anfield in Red.

That said, Liverpool have had their fair share of world class forwards with Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian King, still terrifying Premier League defenders with little sign of slowing down.
