Why Liverpool's front three might be too good

Why Liverpool's front three might be too good

Liverpool have the best team in England, the table does not lie. However, there are growing fears that the squad is in need of refreshment.

These fears have been aired since the Merseyside club pulled out of their pursuit of RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner. Jurgen Klopp reportedly saw him as a perfect option to back up Liverpool's feared front three.

However, due to the coronavirus' effect on the transfer market, a move for Werner was deemed too expensive.

This is of course sensible on the face of it. A €60 million release clause along with wages of around £200,000-a-week is pricey even in a healthy market. However, the failure to sign him does throw up an issue.

Despite the quality of Liverpool's front three, one of the few issues most people have with the squad is a lack of depth in attack.

While he may be a cult hit, Divock Origi is not on the same level as Liverpool's starting attackers. Xherdan Shaqiri meanwhile, can't get a game, while Harvey Elliot is too green to be a regular option.

Werner would have been a versatile and talented option to rotate with the three.

However, as with any star attacker, Werner would almost certainly not be content with a place on the Anfield bench.

However, it's highly unlikely he would have shifted Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino or Sadio Mane from Klopp's favourite XI, at least in the short term. As a result, Jurgen Klopp has a problem many would love to have. How to convince incoming attackers to be happy as a backup?

Further down the line, that is exactly what is going to need to be done. Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino are all in their late 20's and Liverpool can't allow them to age together.

Names such as Kai Havertz and Jadon Sancho have been linked, but this is the quality that Liverpool are going to need to look at if they want to stay at the top.

Loyalty to his squad is everything to Jurgen Klopp, it's part of what has made him so successful. However, he can be ruthless, and that is what will be needed soon.
