(Video) Remembering Liverpool’s last Community Shield win – back in 2006

Liverpool face off against Manchester City this weekend for the Community Shield.

It’s a ‘trophy’ they haven’t won since 2006. In recent years they’ve fallen short to Arsenal and Manchester City and they face their Manchester rivals once again at the King Power this Saturday.

Their last attempt was in 2019 against City as they lost out 5-4 on penalties.

Before the two sides re-ignite their rivalry, we look back at the last time the Reds triumphed in this competition – taking you back to 2006.

2006 Community Shield

The Reds had just come off the back of the 2005/06 season as FA Cup winners following Steven Gerrard’s heroics in the final against West Ham.

They had also finished third behind Chelsea and Manchester United and won the Super Cup, following their historic Istanbul Champions League victory in the 2004/05 season.

Whereas Chelsea had just come off the back of retaining their Premier League title and Community Shield. Cast your mind back to a time where Jose Mourinho and Rafael Benitez were sworn enemies and Liverpool vs Chelsea was always a blockbuster watch.

The starting line-ups read:
Liverpool: Reina; Finnan, Carragher (C), Agger, Riise; Pennant, Sissoko, Zenden, Gonzalez; Garcia, Crouch

Chelsea: Cudicini; Geremi, Terry (C), Carvalho, Ferriera; Ballack, Essien, Lampard, Robben; Shevchenko, Drogba

The Reds had taken the lead through John Arne Riise in the 9th minute, before Chelsea’s star summer signing Andriy Shevchenko levelled before halftime.

Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Craig Bellamy all came off the bench to help Liverpool to a 2-1 victory which saw Peter Crouch score a debut goal in the 80th minute to secure the shield.
