Video: €86m-rated Inter Milan star gives up when he sees Virgil van Dijk

Lautaro Martinez had the chance to turn on the jets but when he saw Virgil van Dijk, he gave up and allowed the Dutch defender to retrieve the ball.

Okay, the Inter Milan forward might have capitalised on some nonchalant defending from van Dijk later in the game but Liverpool got the last laugh as they progressed to the Champions League quarterfinals.

However, in the first half, there was a moment when Marcelo Brozovic broke past Andy Robertson in midfield and played a through ball to €86m-rated Lautaro Martinez but when he saw who he was up against in a foot race, the 24-year-old didn’t fancy his chances.

“He knew, didn’t he?” asked the commentator on duty.

“Martinez looked at Virgil van Dijk and thought: ‘I’ve got no chance.’
