Liverpool still believe they can sign one of their midfield targets next summer, despite him signing for Wolves.

The Reds had been linked with Sporting's Matheus Nunes earlier in the window but without any official bids, the midfielder opted to move to Wolves.

He had already turned down a move to the Midlands club but his eagerness to play in the Premier League has seen him finally agree a move.

Despite Liverpool missing out on the highly coveted player, reports claim he could still make the move to Merseyside next summer.

Liverpool could still sign Nunes

The Reds are currently dealing with a squad fractured by injuries and a move for a midfielder has been backed by fans and pundits.

Nunes had attracted attention from Chelsea, Manchester City and PSG before signing for Wolves but the issue was that Liverpool were not ready to commit to a signing this summer - this is clearly the perfect example of Liverpool's current stance on transfers.

The club believes he could move on next summer, although this would have to be for a far higher fee than the £38m (plus add-ons) they paid for his services.

It's not something that regularly happens in football; it normally happens with players who join teams fighting relegation, they then impress before they are relegated to the Championship and then they re-join a PL club for a bargain fee. For example - see Maxwell Cornet.

But in this case, Nunes will be joining a club with a strong Portuguese contingent and after a season, he may want to stay in a place with familiar surroundings. However, if he performs like he has the potential to, then it won't be long before teams start to enquire about a move.

He will likely cost close to £50m (his original release clause at Sporting) if Liverpool want to move for him instantly next season. It will be interesting to see how he gets on in the PL and which clubs become interested because there will be interest once Nunes becomes aclimatized to the league.
