Fabrizio Romano says talks are progressing in negotiations for £54m star's new deal

Talks are progressing regarding a new contract for Brazilian midfielder Fabinho, according to Fabrizio Romano, with the midfielder keen on staying at Anfield.

The Italian journalist took to his Twitter account this morning to report: "Liverpool are now progressing in negotiations for Fabinho’s new contract, he’s open to stay and extend the agreement.

"Ibrahima Konaté clause has been triggered and he’s already completed his medical days ago: he’s a Liverpool player, never been in doubt. Official soon."

Fabinho is one of a number of players that are in line for a new contract after a season that reminded Jurgen Klopp that the players at the club are as important as new signings.

Transfermarkt value the 27-year-old at £54million but Liverpool fans consider his presence in midfield to be priceless.

Liverpool are looking to get as much of their summer business done as early as possible and that includes internal negotiations.

After a season in which his steely presence in midfield was both missed and cherished, the Reds are doing all they can to get a new contract on the table for their Brazilian destroyer to sign.

The former Real Madrid right-back played 21 games at centre-back this season but his return to midfield in the final 10 games of the campaign helped the Anfield side to a top-three Premier League finish.

In the 10 games since Fabinho returned to the midfield three, Liverpool won 8 and drawn 2.

The two games they dropped points in, Fabinho was back in central defence which just highlights how important it is that he plays in midfield.

Not only does playing him at centre-back mean the midfield loses its bite but it also means that Thiago Alcantara was required to play as a no.6.

By playing Fabinho in midfield again, Jurgen Klopp unleashed Thiago on the Premier League which saw him score his first goal in Red while his pressing helped keep opposition sides penned in deep in their own halves.

The best game no.3 played for the club came two years and 21 days ago against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final at Anfield.

Despite having to play conservatively because of the yellow card he picked up earlier in the game, Fabinho turned in one of the best performances I've ever seen from a defensive midfielder.

He kept Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi and Philippe Coutinho under wraps as Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum scored a brace each to send Anfield into a frenzy.

Liverpool went on to win the Champions League for the sixth time by beating Spurs in the final.

It's great to see that Fabinho is receiving the credit he deserves and with some luck, Klopp's side will avoid injuries next season and will go on to win some more silverware.
