Completing surprise transfer for £180,000/week ace would have solved Jurgen Klopp's midfield woes

Completing surprise transfer for £180,000/week ace would have solved Jurgen Klopp's midfield woes

Liverpool fans are currently sweating over their midfield, but they could have solved their midfield issues by re-signing a former player.

With question marks over the reliability of Thiago, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, it makes sense for Liverpool to bring in a reliable midfielder.

Looking at how Liverpool operate, it's unlikely they would sign a 'stop-gap' player or spend big money considering Jude Bellingham is their long-term target.

That's why Roma's signing of former Red Georginio Wijnaldum will be a frustrating move to see for Liverpool fans, as they would have welcomed the Dutchman back with open arms.

Signing Wijnaldum again...really?

He only had one season at PSG, but it's fair to say that the transfer fell flat on its face given how little Wijnaldum was relied upon over the course of the season.

He's moved on loan from PSG to Roma and Jose Mourinho has secured a great deal.

Liverpool re-signing someone on a loan who knows the club, the league and the squad would have helped to stem the flow of constant niggling injuries in their midfield.

The only issue would have been that Wijnaldum has moved to Roma for regular game-time, something which Klopp may not have been able to promise.

Wages may also have been an issue with Wijnaldum earning £180,000 per week.

He actually featured in 31 games in the league, but only started 18 of them and only featured in 12 mins of the knockout games against Manchester City and Real Madrid.

Whilst it didn't work out there, with a World Cup on the horizon Wijnaldum will be re-energised and re-invigorated away from PSG and Roma will have a player ready to give 110% from minute one.

A loan would have worked out great for Liverpool given he wouldn't block the paths of young talents Harvey Elliot, Fabio Carvalho or Curtis Jones.

Plus, he wouldn't block the likes of Matheus Nunes or Jude Bellingham should they sign next summer; with the current injury list and fan unrest, it looks more and more like a deal that should have happened.
