Neville & Souness say Liverpool need to invest in key area after report Reds can agree £42.4m deal to sign ace

Gary Neville and Graeme Souness have agreed that Liverpool need to sign a new midfielder after a report said the Reds can sign Saul.

While they rarely agree on anything for Sky Sports, the pundits both believe that Liverpool need to find a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum.

“Wijnaldum’s gone, Henderson’s a year older, James Milner’s a year older,” he told Sky Sports.

“I’d like to see something else in midfield. It’s going to be a long hard season.”

Neville agreed, saying: “I honestly can’t separate them. I mean you should say Liverpool because of what’s happened in the last few years and last season was a major blip for them”, he admitted.

“Van Dijk [is] back - but I think Manchester United will be an improvement on last season. I do think Liverpool will miss Wijnaldum and do need a midfield player.”

Liverpool have unsurprisingly been linked with a host of midfielders this summer but with Renato Sanches now injured, Saul Niguez remains as the only name with any credible interest.

Sanches suffered a meniscus injury and will now miss the start of the 2021/22 season and if Liverpool were planning on signing him, those plans will surely be put on hold.

Spanish news outlet AS claims that a deal can be agreed if the right bid is submitted but they don’t name the price that Atleti would be willing to negotiate at.

Sport suggests that the player will be sold if a €50m (£42.4m) offer is received despite the fact that his contract includes a €150m (£127m) release clause.

While Saul is a no.8, his ability is often disregarded but the goal he scored against Bayern Munich in the 2015/16 season should serve as a reminder of the unbelievable skill he has.

Signing him for below £50million would be a steal but time is running out for Liverpool

Liverpool beat Norwich City with ease but later on in the season, Jurgen Klopp will hope he doesn't have to turn to James Milner or Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain too often.

The former is 35 years old now and it's clear his best days are behind him and for all his pace and ability, Chambo always seems a bit limited.

Getting someone like Saul in would not just add more depth but it would greatly raise the bar at Liverpool, ensuring that injuries to key players won't hurt Jurgen Klopp's.
