"My dream is to play for Liverpool": 19-year-old starlet standing at 1.89m discloses LFC ambition
On-loan Liverpool starlet Sepp van den Berg has revealed that despite his slow start to life at Anfield, he dreams of playing for the first team and understands the advantage of his youth.
The Dutch centre-half, who stands at a towering 1.89m, spoke to the Liverpool Echo on Tuesday about his ambitions for the future and how, at 19 years of age, he is in no rush to make major career decisions.
He said: “When I joined (Liverpool), it was a big, big step for me! I came from Holland when I was only 17. It was a really big step but I’ve really enjoyed every moment I’ve been here."
Van den Berg joined the club from Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle and is currently out on loan at Preston North End. His loan move to the Championship saw Ben Davies go the opposite way but he has yet to feature for Liverpool.
Van den Berg continued: "I’m still 19 so there is really no rush for me. My dream is to be able to play for Liverpool. I signed for five years when I came. I will have three years left in the summer. There is plenty of time for me.
"It’s my dream to play for Liverpool. That is all I think about in the long term, there is nothing else I think about."
This season has been a nightmare for Jurgen Klopp as he has had to navigate a plethora of defensive injuries.
Every player that has appeared at centre-back this season has been injured at least once with van Dijk, Gomez, Matip, Henderson, Fabinho, Phillips, Kabak and Williams all sidelined at some point this season.
While on loan at Preston North End, van den Berg hasn't suffered a single injury. In fact, he hasn't missed a single game of football since the 2018/19 season when he missed three games for PEC Zwolle due to a groin strain.
Being on loan will be very beneficial for van den Berg because his biggest weakness heading into the 2020/21 season was a lack of experience at a senior level which was exposed horribly when Liverpool beat Arsenal on penalties after a wild 5-5 draw sent the Reds to penalties against the Gunners.
Van den Berg was very 'green' but his technical ability was fantastic. All he needs is more experience and another loan next season could be on the cards as it seems unlikely that there will be room for him in the Liverpool squad.
With Ibrahima Konate set to arrive in the summer, Liverpool will have too many centre-backs and that's before they make a decision on whether or not to make Ozan Kabak's move to Anfield permanent.
Sepp van den Berg is very talented and he's got the height to be a top centre-back but he needs more game time before he can realise his Liverpool dream.
