Report: €30million Michael Edwards transfer plan undone

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool were interested in signing Donyell Malen before he moved to Borussia Dortmund for €30million.

The Dutchman sealed a move to the Bundesliga last week after the Reds failed to firm up their interest but it has once again been confirmed that they were indeed keen on bringing him to Anfield.

He writes for Bench Warmers: "AC Milan followed him between October and December of last year but without ever making an offer to PSV Eindhoven.

"Liverpool only thought about it in case they sold Shaqiri and Origi faster. Dortmund, on the other hand, after selling Sancho closed the deal."

Liverpool have just under four weeks to sign a player to challenge Firmino but with a lack of interest in Origi, it seems difficult to see if that will happen.

The Belgian needs to leave the club for the benefit of both parties as he is no longer in contention to play for his national team and he doesn't contribute in a meaningful way to Liverpool anymore.

Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri leaving would free up space for Jurgen Klopp to sign a new forward but things will need to pick up pace soon otherwise Liverpool risk entering the final couple of weeks of the summer in a dangerous place.

It's a pity as regular readers of this site will know that I believe Malen would have been the perfect forward for Liverpool.

Just 22, he could have grown into a future star for this club while learning from Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Firmino.
