Decorated €70million star wants Liverpool move despite approach from Manchester United

According to ABC, Raphael Varane is considering a move to Anfield after it was reported in February by Mundo Deportivo that Liverpool are interested in him.

Liverpool are hot on Ibrahima Konate’s heels but an interesting report from ABC suggests that Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane is keen on a move to Merseyside.

The Reds were previously linked with a move for the decorated defender by Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo and now ABC suggest that, with Varane refusing to sign a new deal and his terms expiring next year, the World Cup winner is keen on joining Liverpool.

ABC also go on to state that Manchester United have approached the 27-year-old to express their desire to sign him. Even if the Reds don’t wind up signing Varane, it’s always pleasing to hear that top players prefer joining Liverpool over United.

Varane is reportedly valued at €70million (£59.5m) by Madrid despite having just over 12 months left on his deal.

Konate seems to be the guy that Klopp wants most with age, potential and price all factored in but a centre-back pairing of Varane and Virgil van Dijk would be the best in the world by a country mile.

What the Los Blancos defender lacks in decision-making would be countered by van Dijk’s unparalleled positioning and ability to instruct his teammates on where to be and what to do.

The Dutchman made Dejan Lovren look world-class at times which makes you wonder what he could do alongside a defender with Varane’s combination of experience, pace and boundless talent.

It goes unnoticed because he’s been around for what feels like a lifetime but Varane is still only 27 and is entering the best years of his career, with some central defenders peaking in their late 20s to early 30s.
